Gaston Early College of Medical Sciences (GECMS) is a small early college high school designed for students interested in a career in health sciences, scientific research, medicine, or human services. All students take high school and college classes beginning in ninth grade and have the opportunity to earn an associate degree from Gaston College by high school graduation.
GECMS is located on the Gaston College campus in Dallas, NC. Students do not pay tuition, books, or other fees. Bus transportation is available. GECMS does NOT offer sports and other co-curricular activities such as band, cheer, etc., nor are students permitted to participate in those activities at their home high school.

Degree Earned: Associate in General Education–Nursing
Best for students interested in hands-on patient care, such as:
- Nursing
- Radiology
- Emergency Services
- Surgical Technology
- Ultrasound Technology
- Other clinical healthcare careers
🧬 Pre-Medical
Degree Earned: Associate of Science–Pre-Medical
Best for students interested in advanced science or medical careers, including:
- Doctors & Physician Assistants
- Scientists & Researchers
- Biomedical Engineers
- Veterinarians
🤝 Human Services
Degree Earned: Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Human Services Technology
Designed for students who want to help others through:
- Social Work
- Non Profit Organizations
- Advocacy/Support- education, mental health, domestic violence, substance abuse
- Human Services agencies
SELECTION PROCESS
GECMS is a school of choice. Students interested in attending must be enrolled in the 8th grade and submit an application during the School Choice window each year. The GECMS Selection Committee will conduct a holistic review of each applicant, evaluating them for their academic potential and developmental readiness to enroll next school year. Students meeting the eligibility requirements will enter the lottery. Priority will be given to students who will be the first in their families to attend college. Students must successfully complete 8th grade to be approved for enrollment and transfer to GECMS.
- Must be a rising 8th grader and reside in Gaston County by beginning of school year
- Demonstrate grade-level proficiency or above by the end of 8th grade
- Have minimal school absences and tardies
- Does not have any major behavioral infractions
